Roy Keane (Republic of Ireland, 1991–2005) won 67 caps and scored nine goals, becoming one of the team’s fiercest leaders and a regular captain. A combative, box-to-box midfielder, he blended disciplined positioning with incisive forward passing and late runs into the box, and he featured in Ireland’s 1994 World Cup finals campaign. His international story is inseparable from the 2002 “Saipan” fallout with manager Mick McCarthy over preparations, which ended with Keane being sent home on the eve of the tournament. He later returned as Martin O’Neill’s assistant (2013–2018).
