Ireland’s Italia ’90 campaign (their first World Cup finals) became a national landmark under Jack Charlton. Drawn in Group F, they opened with a 1–1 draw vs England (Lineker early, Kevin Sheedy equaliser), then drew 0–0 with Egypt, before a 1–1 draw with the Netherlands (Gullit, Niall Quinn)—three draws that still took them through, with Ireland and the Dutch separated by the drawing of lots for second place. In the last 16 they drew 0–0 (AET) with Romania and won 5–4 on penalties, before losing the quarter-final 1–0 to hosts Italy (Schillaci).
