John Giles (Republic of Ireland, 1959–1979) was an authoritative, tempo-setting central midfielder who won 59 caps and scored 5 goals. Often viewed as Ireland’s standout player of his era, he combined passing range, control under pressure, and tactical intelligence. He later became player-manager (1973–1980), overseeing a clear upturn in results and credibility: Ireland were more competitive in Euro 1976 qualifying and came close to reaching the 1978 World Cup, including a notable home win over France during that campaign.
