Ireland’s Euro ’88 debut under Jack Charlton was their first appearance at a major finals and instantly became iconic. Drawn in Group 2 with England, the USSR and the Netherlands, Ireland opened in Stuttgart with a famous 1–0 win over England, Ray Houghton heading the winner. They followed with a 1–1 draw with the USSR in Hanover—Ronnie Whelan volleyed Ireland ahead before Oleh Protasov equalised late. Needing a result to progress, Ireland lost 0–1 to the Netherlands in Gelsenkirchen, undone by Wim Kieft’s late goal, and finished third in the group.
