Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign under Martin O’Neill (with Roy Keane as assistant) was built on organisation, direct running and set-pieces. They opened Group E with a 1–1 draw vs Sweden, leading through Wes Hoolahan before a Ciaran Clark own goal denied them a win. A 3–0 loss to Belgium left them needing a result in the last game. Ireland delivered, beating Italy 1–0 via Robbie Brady’s late header to reach the last 16. In the knockout round they led hosts France early through a Brady penalty, but Antoine Griezmann scored twice and Ireland finished with ten men.
