Packie (Pat) Bonner was the Republic of Ireland’s first-choice goalkeeper through the breakthrough years, winning 80 caps (1981–1996). He was ever-present at major tournaments, featuring at Euro ’88 and both the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. His defining Ireland moment came at Italia ’90, saving Daniel Timofte’s shoot-out penalty against Romania to set up David O’Leary’s winner and send Ireland into the quarter-finals—an iconic national sporting memory.
