Republic of Ireland’s 1–0 win over Italy came at Euro 2016 on 22 June 2016 in Lille (Stade Pierre-Mauroy). Already-qualified Italy rotated, but Ireland still needed a result to reach the knockouts. After a tense, low-scoring game (including a big chance for Wes Hoolahan), Ireland finally broke through on 85 minutes: Hoolahan crossed and Robbie Brady headed past Salvatore Sirigu. Ireland then defended the lead to finish third in Group E and progress to the last 16, where they later lost to France.
