John Wark was one of Ipswich Town’s greatest ever players and a central figure in Bobby Robson’s golden era. A midfielder by trade, he was unusual because he combined steel, timing, and intelligence with remarkable goalscoring. Across his Ipswich career he made 679 league appearances and scored 135 league goals, huge numbers for a midfielder. His greatest season was 1980–81, when he scored 36 goals in all competitions, including a record 14 in the UEFA Cup as Ipswich won the trophy. He also helped Town win the 1978 FA Cup and was voted the club’s Player of the Year a record four times.
