Sir Alf Ramsey was the manager who first made Ipswich Town champions of England. Appointed in 1955, he took the club from the Third Division South to the First Division title in just seven years, winning promotion in 1956–57, the Second Division in 1960–61, and then the league championship in 1961–62 in Ipswich’s first ever top-flight season. That achievement remains one of English football’s most remarkable managerial feats. Ramsey built an organised, intelligent side around players like Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips, and his success at Portman Road led directly to the England job in 1963. In many ways, he laid the foundation of Ipswich’s identity as a serious club.
