Paul Mariner was one of the great centre-forwards in Ipswich Town history and a central figure in Bobby Robson’s golden era. Signed from Plymouth in 1976, he scored 135 goals in 339 appearances for Town and led the line with power, movement, and relentless presence. He helped Ipswich win the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, and was man of the match in the FA Cup final against Arsenal. During his time at Portman Road he also became an England regular, going to Euro 1980 and the 1982 World Cup. Mariner was a major reason Ipswich became one of England’s strongest sides.
