George Burley was a major Ipswich Town figure both as a player and as a manager. As a right-back, he made 394 league appearances for the club and was part of the teams that won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981. Later, as manager from 1994 to 2002, he led Ipswich through several near misses before winning promotion to the Premier League via the 2000 play-offs. His finest achievement came the following season, when newly promoted Ipswich finished fifth in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Cup, earning Burley the Manager of the Season award.
