Kevin Beattie was one of Ipswich Town’s greatest ever players and, to many supporters, the best of them all. A powerful, elegant centre-half with pace, authority, and a huge left foot, he became the defensive cornerstone of Bobby Robson’s great side in the 1970s. Beattie helped Ipswich win the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, while also earning nine England caps. He made 228 league appearances and scored 24 league goals for Town, remarkable numbers for a defender. Injuries cut his peak short, but at his best Beattie was seen as a world-class talent and a defining figure in Ipswich history.
