Ipswich Town’s 2000 promotion was the payoff for years of near misses under George Burley. Town finished third in the 1999–2000 First Division, missing automatic promotion by two points, then finally came through the play-offs after previous disappointments. They beat Bolton Wanderers in the semi-finals and then defeated Barnsley 4–2 at Wembley on 29 May 2000, coming from behind to win in the last domestic competitive match at the old Wembley. Marcus Stewart and Richard Naylor scored, while Town’s pace and attacking quality eventually took over. It sent Ipswich back to the top flight for the first time since 1995 and set up their outstanding 2000–01 Premier League season.
