Ipswich Town’s 1981 UEFA Cup win was the greatest European achievement in the club’s history and the peak of Bobby Robson’s side. Town beat AZ Alkmaar 5–4 on aggregate in the two-legged final, winning 3–0 at Portman Road on 6 May 1981 before losing 4–2 in the second leg in the Netherlands on 20 May and still lifting the trophy. The run itself was outstanding: Ipswich beat teams including Saint-Étienne, 1. FC Köln, and AZ, and they did it with a side full of major club figures such as John Wark, Frans Thijssen, Paul Mariner, and Terry Butcher. John Wark finished as the competition’s top scorer with 14 goals, underlining how exceptional Ipswich were in Europe that season.
