Matthäus at Inter was power, leadership, and complete midfield authority. He arrived in 1988 and gave the team everything at once: energy, aggression, passing range, long-range shooting, and the personality to drag matches in Inter’s direction. He was not just a destroyer or a creator; he was both, which made him feel larger than the role itself. He helped drive Inter to the record-setting 1988–89 Scudetto, then added the 1989 Supercoppa Italiana and 1990–91 UEFA Cup. Inter later put him in their Hall of Fame, which fits perfectly: Matthäus was one of the club’s great commanding forces.
