Billy Whitehurst was one of Hull City’s most notorious cult heroes: raw, powerful and genuinely intimidating. Signed from non-league in 1980 for about £2,000, he became a major part of Hull’s early-1980s rise, helping them win promotion in 1982/83 and again in 1984/85. His best season was 1984/85, when he scored 24 goals in all competitions as City went up from the Third Division. Overall, he scored 47 league goals for Hull before joining Newcastle United in 1985. Remembered as much for his fearsome reputation as his goals, Whitehurst remains one of Hull’s great hard-man figures.
