Ken Houghton was one of Hull City’s most important early managers because he laid the foundations for a strong 1960s side. Appointed in 1958 as player-manager, he stabilised the club and then built a competitive team that won promotion from the Third Division in 1965/66. That title-winning side was one of Hull’s most exciting, scoring over 100 league goals and featuring the prolific partnership of Chris Chilton and Ken Wagstaff. Houghton stayed until 1970, overseeing a consistent period in the second tier. His impact wasn’t about one moment, but about creating the platform for one of Hull’s most productive eras.
