Geovanni became an instant Hull City cult hero after joining on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2008, just as the Tigers entered the top flight for the first time; the Brazilian brought flair, experience and spectacular long-range shooting to Phil Brown’s side, scoring Hull’s first-ever Premier League goal in a 2–1 opening-day victory over Fulham before producing memorable strikes against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur during City’s extraordinary early-season run; his free-kick in the 1–0 win at Tottenham and long-range equaliser in the famous 2–1 victory at Arsenal remain defining images of Hull’s first Premier League campaign; Geovanni finished 2008–09 as the club’s leading league scorer and helped secure survival, remaining for a second top-flight season before leaving in 2010 and retaining cult status among Tigers supporters.
