Nick Barmby was Hull City’s local Premier League star who came home and helped drive the club’s rise. Born in Hull, he joined City in 2004 and was part of the back-to-back promotions under Peter Taylor, taking the club from the fourth tier to the Championship. He later played a key role in the 2008 promotion to the Premier League, scoring in the play-off semi-final against Watford. A clever, technical attacker with England pedigree, Barmby gave Hull class and belief. He later managed the club briefly in 2011/12, making 180 league appearances as a player.
