Hull City’s 2008 promotion was the moment the club’s history changed. Phil Brown’s side finished third in the Championship, beat Watford 6–1 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals, then faced Bristol City at Wembley on 24 May 2008. Dean Windass, Hull-born and 39 years old, scored the only goal with a brilliant first-half volley to seal a 1–0 win. It sent Hull into the top flight for the first time in their 104-year history. More than promotion, it was a transformation: City went from long-time lower-league club to Premier League side overnight.
