John Brownlie was one of the standout defenders in Hibernian’s early-1970s side. A pioneering right-back, he brought more than tackling: he attacked from deep, surged down the flank and delivered dangerous crosses, helping define Eddie Turnbull’s adventurous Hibs team. Brownlie joined from Pumpherston Juniors in 1969 and spent nine years at Easter Road, making 211 league appearances and scoring 14 goals before moving to Newcastle United in 1978. He was part of the Hibs team that won the 1972–73 Scottish League Cup and his form also earned him seven Scotland caps. He remains one of the club’s most admired full-backs.
