Marius Žaliūkas was a huge Hearts figure from 2006–2013, arriving from FBK Kaunas (initially on loan) and growing into a commanding, all-action defender. Used at centre-back and across the back line, he became a leader in the dressing room and was appointed club captain. His defining moment was captaining Hearts to the 2012 Scottish Cup, including the famous 5–1 final win over Hibs at Hampden. After leaving, he later battled motor neurone disease and died in 2020, with Hearts honouring him by retiring No. 26 for 2021–22.
