Dave McPherson was one of Hearts’ toughest and most important modern defenders, spread across two spells from 1987 to 1992 and 1994 to 1999. A commanding centre-back, he brought aggression, leadership, and a real attacking threat from defence, becoming club captain during his first spell and later helping guide younger defenders in his second. He played a major role in some of Hearts’ strongest late-1980s and 1990s sides, and his biggest achievement was helping the club win the 1998 Scottish Cup, their first major trophy in 36 years. He was later inducted into the Hearts Hall of Fame, which reflects how highly he is regarded.
