Gary Mackay is a Hearts modern-era great and the club’s record appearance maker. A local midfielder, he signed in July 1980 from Salvesen Boys Club and went on to give Hearts 16+ years of service. He played a club-record 737 games (including a record 515 league appearances) and scored 45 league goals, combining relentless running with consistency and leadership. He later left for Airdrieonians in 1997 and was inducted into the Hearts Hall of Fame.
