Gary Locke is a significant Hearts figure because he served the club as player, coach, and manager. As a player from 1992 to 2001, he made 153 league appearances and scored 5 league goals, usually operating in midfield or at right-back. He was club captain when Hearts won the 1997–98 Scottish Cup, although injury kept him out of the final itself. Later, after returning as a coach, he became manager in 2013 during one of the club’s hardest periods, when administration, a transfer embargo, and a 15-point deduction made the job extremely difficult. Locke’s importance at Hearts is about loyalty and service as much as silverware.
