Andy Ritchie is regarded as one of Greenock Morton’s greatest-ever players, joining from Celtic in 1976 and becoming the creative genius of an exciting Cappielow side; nicknamed “The Idle Idol,” Ritchie possessed extraordinary technique, vision and free-kick ability, helping Morton win the First Division title in 1977–78 and challenge strongly after promotion, while his brilliance earned him the SFWA Footballer of the Year award in 1979.
