Greenock Morton’s 1986–87 season ended in promotion glory. Allan McGraw’s side won the Scottish First Division (second tier), finishing champions on 57 points with a 24–9–11 record and 88–56 goals, earning a return to the Premier Division. Rowan Alexander powered the attack and finished as the division’s top scorer with 23 league goals. Cup runs were brief: Morton reached the Scottish Cup fourth round before a 3–2 home loss to St Mirren, and exited the League Cup in round two, beaten 5–2 by Dundee. It was a vintage Cappielow campaign built on consistency and big away wins when it mattered.
