Glentoran’s 2020 Irish Cup win was a dramatic one. In the delayed 2019–20 competition, the Glens beat Ballymena United 2–1 after extra time in the final at Windsor Park on 31 July 2020. Paul O’Neill put Glentoran ahead, Cathair Friel equalised for Ballymena, and with penalties looming Robbie McDaid struck late in extra time to win it. The success gave Glentoran their 23rd Irish Cup and their first trophy in five years. It was also notable because the final was played after the COVID pause and became one of the first matches in the UK to admit a limited number of supporters again.
