Paul McGee was one of the most important forwards in Galway United history. The former Republic of Ireland international had three spells with the club and became Galway United’s all-time League of Ireland top scorer. His best early impact came in 1985–86, when he scored heavily and helped the club win its first senior trophy, the League Cup, even scoring in the 2–0 final win over Dundalk. He also scored for Galway in Europe, notably away to FC Groningen, and later served as player-manager in 1989–90. In simple terms, McGee gave Galway goals, profile and some of the biggest moments of the club’s early years.
