Galway United’s 1991 story is all about the club’s greatest day. Managed by Joey Malone, they won the FAI Cup for the first and still only time, beating Shamrock Rovers 1–0 in the final at Lansdowne Road on 12 May 1991. The winning goal came late from captain Johnny Glynn, who finished from a Tommy Keane cross, with Keane widely remembered as the creative spark of that cup run. That triumph mattered so much because it remains Galway United’s only major national trophy. In simple terms, 1991 is remembered as the year Galway United reached their historic high point.
