Dave Watson became one of Everton’s great defensive leaders after joining from Norwich City in 1986, quickly establishing himself as a commanding, courageous centre-back and helping Howard Kendall’s side win the 1986–87 First Division championship in his first season; Watson remained a cornerstone of the team through the following decade and eventually became club captain, with his defining moment coming in 1995 when he led Joe Royle’s Everton to Wembley and lifted the FA Cup after a 1–0 victory over Manchester United; renowned for his strength in the air, tackling and consistency, Watson stayed at Goodison Park until 2001 and made more than 500 appearances for the club, bridging the successful 1980s and the more difficult Premier League years while establishing himself as one of Everton’s most respected and enduring modern defenders.
