Gary Stevens became one of the outstanding right-backs of Everton’s great 1980s side after progressing through the club’s youth system and making his senior debut in 1982, with his pace, stamina and attacking runs forming a particularly effective partnership with Trevor Steven on the right flank; Stevens helped Howard Kendall’s team win the 1984 FA Cup, the First Division championships of 1984–85 and 1986–87, and the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup, starting the 3–1 final victory over Rapid Vienna in Rotterdam; his performances also established him as an England international, representing his country at the 1986 World Cup, before he left Goodison Park for Rangers in 1988; with more than 200 Everton appearances, Stevens was an integral part of the side that enjoyed one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
