Neville Southall became one of the greatest goalkeepers in Everton history after joining from Bury in 1981, developing into the commanding last line of defence for Howard Kendall’s outstanding side of the 1980s; the Welsh international was exceptional during the 1984–85 season, when Everton won the First Division title and European Cup Winners’ Cup, and his performances earned him the FWA Footballer of the Year award in 1985; Southall also helped Everton win another league championship in 1986–87 and the FA Cup in 1984 and 1995, remaining at Goodison Park through changing generations of players; renowned for his reflexes, positioning and imposing presence, he made a club-record 751 competitive appearances between 1981 and 1998, establishing himself as one of Everton’s most enduring and celebrated players.
