Graeme Sharp became one of Everton’s greatest goalscorers after joining from Dumbarton in 1980, developing into the powerful centre-forward who led the attack during Howard Kendall’s outstanding side of the 1980s; Sharp helped Everton win the 1984 FA Cup, two First Division titles in 1984–85 and 1986–87, and the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup, while his spectacular volley in a 1–0 victory at Liverpool in October 1984 remains one of the most celebrated goals in Merseyside derby history; combining aerial strength with intelligent movement and accomplished finishing, he formed effective partnerships with Andy Gray, Gary Lineker and Adrian Heath during different stages of Everton’s success; Sharp eventually scored 159 goals in 447 appearances, leaving in 1991 as the club’s leading post-war goalscorer and one of the defining players of Everton’s golden 1980s generation.
