Peter Reid became the midfield heartbeat of Everton’s great 1980s side after joining from Bolton Wanderers in 1982, with his aggression, stamina, leadership and intelligent passing making him central to Howard Kendall’s transformation of the club; Reid helped Everton win the 1984 FA Cup, then enjoyed an extraordinary 1984–85 campaign as the Toffees captured the First Division championship and European Cup Winners’ Cup, defeating Rapid Vienna 3–1 in the final, while his performances earned him the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award in 1985; he later helped Everton secure another league title in 1986–87, and although injuries affected parts of his Goodison career, Reid made more than 200 appearances before leaving in 1989, becoming remembered as one of the driving forces behind one of the finest teams in Everton history.
