Bob Latchford became one of Everton’s great goalscorers after joining from Birmingham City for a British-record £350,000 fee in 1974, combining strength, aerial ability and clinical finishing to lead the Toffees’ attack throughout the 1970s; his defining campaign came in 1977–78, when he famously reached 30 First Division goals, earning a £10,000 prize offered for the first player to achieve the feat that season, with his 30th arriving on the final day against Chelsea; Latchford also helped Everton challenge near the top of the league and reach the 1977 League Cup final, and by the time he left for Swansea City in 1981 he had scored 138 goals in 289 appearances for the club, establishing himself as one of the most prolific and popular Everton strikers of his generation.
