Andrei Kanchelskis became one of Everton’s most exciting players of the 1990s after joining from Manchester United in 1995, adding explosive pace, direct running and goals from the right wing to Joe Royle’s side; the Russian international enjoyed a superb 1995–96 season, scoring 16 goals in all competitions as Everton finished sixth in the Premier League, and he became particularly celebrated for scoring twice in a 2–1 Merseyside derby victory over Liverpool at Anfield in November 1995; capable of devastating defenders on the counterattack and contributing far more goals than a conventional winger, Kanchelskis quickly became a Goodison Park favourite, and although his Everton spell was relatively brief—ending with a move to Fiorentina in 1997—his spectacular performances, derby heroics and memorable goals ensured his lasting cult status among supporters.
