Séamus Coleman became one of Everton’s great modern servants after joining from Sligo Rovers for just £60,000 in January 2009, developing from a relatively unknown prospect into a long-serving right-back and club captain; renowned for his energetic overlapping runs, determination and leadership, the Republic of Ireland international was outstanding during 2013–14, scoring six Premier League goals as Roberto Martínez’s Everton finished fifth with a club-record 72 Premier League points, and he was named in the PFA Team of the Year; Coleman later inherited the Everton captaincy and remained an influential figure through numerous managerial changes and difficult seasons, passing 400 appearances for the club and becoming one of its longest-serving players; his journey from a modest transfer fee to captain and senior statesman made him one of the defining Everton figures of the Premier League era.
