Alan Ball was Everton’s turbo-charged midfield engine, signed in 1966 (a British-record £110,000) from Blackpool straight after starring for England national football team at the 1966 FIFA World Cup. At Goodison Park his endless running, edge and left-foot quality helped form the classic midfield with Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall, powering the 1969–70 league title. A true box-to-box runner, he arrived late to score and pressed like a forward; his fiery leadership sometimes boiled over, but usually dragged standards up. He won 72 caps, later moved to Arsenal, and went on to manage Portsmouth, Southampton and Manchester City.
