Everton’s 1995 FA Cup triumph provided one of the club’s defining modern moments, as Joe Royle’s side defeated Manchester United 1–0 at Wembley on 20 May 1995 to lift the trophy for the fifth time; the decisive goal arrived after 30 minutes when Matt Jackson’s cross was headed against the bar by Duncan Ferguson and Paul Rideout reacted quickest to head home the rebound, while goalkeeper Neville Southall and a determined defence featuring Dave Watson, David Unsworth and Gary Ablett resisted United’s attempts to equalise; captain Dave Watson lifted the cup after a campaign that had also included victories over Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, completing a remarkable turnaround after Royle had inherited a team fighting relegation earlier that season and giving Everton their first major trophy since the 1986–87 league championship.
