Howard Kendall became one of the most important figures in Everton history, first starring as a midfielder after joining from Preston North End in 1967 and forming part of the celebrated “Holy Trinity” alongside Alan Ball and Colin Harvey that inspired the 1969–70 First Division title; his greatest impact came as manager from 1981, when he transformed Everton into one of Europe’s strongest sides, winning the 1984 FA Cup, the First Division championship in 1984–85 and 1986–87, and the club’s first European trophy, the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup, with Everton also reaching the 1985 FA Cup final; Kendall later returned for two further managerial spells, and his combination of success as both player and manager established him as a defining figure of Goodison Park history.
