Sir Bobby Robson managed England from 1982 to 1990, overseeing two World Cups and one European Championship. His first major tournament, the 1982 World Cup, ended in the second group stage; in 1986 England reached the quarter-finals, losing to Argentina in the match defined by Maradona’s “Hand of God” and solo goal. His best run was Italia ’90, where England reached the semi-finals and lost to West Germany on penalties—fueling the enduring “Gazza tears” mythology. Robson resigned after 1990 and is remembered for restoring belief, developing talent, and modernising England’s approach.
