Platt vs Belgium for England was one of those goals that lives forever because of the timing and the technique. In the 1990 World Cup last 16 on 26 June 1990, England were heading for penalties at 0–0 in Bologna when David Platt, on as a substitute, met Paul Gascoigne’s floated free-kick with that famous swivelling volley in the 119th minute to win it 1–0. FIFA and the FA both frame it as one of England’s classic World Cup moments, and FIFA’s tournament records list it as the latest goal scored in normal or extra time at that World Cup. What made it so iconic was that it felt improvised but perfect: back to goal, quick adjustment, clean contact, no panic. It was not just a winner, it was a release, and it turned Platt from useful midfielder into part of England folklore.
