Bobby Moore was the cool-headed centre-back who captained England to the 1966 FIFA World Cup at Wembley Stadium, defining “composed defending”: reading danger early, stepping in to nick the ball, then passing cleanly to start attacks. He won 108 caps and captained England 90 times, joint-most ever. Praised by Pelé as the greatest defender he played against, Moore’s legacy is class, courage and leadership—still a reference point for English defending. At club level he was the heartbeat of West Ham United, lifting the FA Cup (1964) and Cup Winners’ Cup (1965).
