Steve McManaman for England was dribbling, intelligence, and slight underuse. He was one of the most gifted English players of his generation, capable of carrying the ball through pressure, creating from wide or central areas, and making attacks feel faster and less predictable. He won 37 caps and scored 3 goals for England between 1994 and 2001. What shapes his England story is that he rarely felt fully trusted despite obvious quality. He still made a real mark at Euro 96, where he was named in the team of the tournament, and he also played at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. So his England legacy is a bit bittersweet: stylish, effective, and probably less used than a player of that talent should have been.
