England’s 1990 World Cup (Italia ’90) was their best run since 1966, reaching the semi-finals under Bobby Robson. They edged through a tricky group with Ireland, the Netherlands, and Egypt (all three games low-scoring), then improved in the knockouts: Belgium 1–0 after extra time (David Platt late winner), Cameroon 3–2 after extra time in an epic quarter-final (two Gary Lineker penalties), and a 1–1 semi-final with West Germany in Turin decided by penalties. England lost the shootout 4–3, remembered for Gazza’s tears after a booking and misses by Pearce and Waddle. They finished fourth after losing the third-place match to Italy.
