Bobby Charlton was one of England’s greatest players: a powerful, elegant midfielder with long-range shooting and huge stamina. He won 106 caps (then an England record) and scored 49 goals (also a record for decades). He was central to England’s 1966 World Cup win, scoring both goals in the semi-final vs Portugal and playing the full final as captain Bobby Moore lifted the trophy. Charlton later captained England and helped Manchester United win the 1968 European Cup, becoming a defining figure of English football for generation after generation.
