Terry Butcher was a hard-nosed England centre-back who earned 77 caps and scored 3 goals between 1980 and 1990, and he also captained the national team. His England legacy is often summed up by the iconic blood-soaked image from the 0–0 draw with Sweden in Stockholm on 6 September 1989, a 1990 World Cup qualifier: he suffered a serious head wound early on, was bandaged up, and played on as the shirt turned red. He then featured at the 1990 World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals.
