Hamish McAlpine was one of Dundee United’s greatest ever goalkeepers and one of the club’s most distinctive characters. He joined United in 1966, became first choice in the early 1970s, and went on to make 688 appearances for the club, according to Dundee United and Arab Archive. He was part of the side that won the 1979 and 1980 League Cups and the 1982–83 league title, and he also played in the 1983–84 European Cup run to the semi-finals. Unusually for a goalkeeper, he scored three times for United, which added to his cult status. He remains a true Tannadice legend.
