Chris Shields was one of the driving forces behind Dundalk’s modern golden era. A tough, intelligent midfielder, he joined from Bray Wanderers in 2012 and became a cornerstone of the side that dominated Irish football under Stephen Kenny and Vinny Perth. During his Dundalk spell, he won five League of Ireland titles, three FAI Cups and three League Cups, while also playing a major role in the club’s European runs, including the 2016–17 Europa League group stage and the 2020–21 Europa League group stage. Individually, he was named FAI League Player of the Year in 2018, which summed up his importance.
